I’m hesitant to write an article about Sinulog festivity. There is a lot to talk to if you come to think of it! Year after year the whole celebration is what Cebuano awaits every 3rd week of January. Nothing is more fun but to be here and enjoy with the rest of people in the city.
Just at the writing of this post, I go out and roam around just like the rest. Together with my niece, we accompanied our mother to Minore Basilica del Sto. Nino, the place of worship for Roman Catholic. Out there, I notice there are thousands of people. The church was full that even outside the vicinity people almost can’t be accommodated.
I look around. Something has caught my sight. The Magellan’s Cross was turned into a venue where petitions were collected. Candles occupy the space. Since from the preparation until now, people keep coming back and forth. As devotees, the day is extra special to them.
I am overwhelmed seeing this population but more than the numbers, my thoughts wandered. It must have been they have so much that they have a devotion to who they say Nino, the child Jesus. What brings them there??? It was such a powerful faith to believe in the power of the wooden human sculptured image.
Personally, I witness how these devotees pave respect to Snr. Sto. Nino – that includes my mother. Waving hands and some are crying while singing a heart-piercing song “Bato Balani sa Gugma (Gozos)”. They truly believe that the little child would hear their prayers.
The time of Moses, in the time the Ten Commandments were given by God to his people. It was exactly alike. Dancing. Singing. Worshipping. People are celebrating in lieu of their human-made golden God. Was it the modern age version of the scene at Mt. Sinai? The question entails a deep bible understanding for reflection.
To see a crowd like this is astonishing. Faith binds people into one. However, whatever is the reason for having such strong faith, each has also a responsibility to take part. One is to examine the basis of belief. God is a jealous God. One of the greatest commandment that He left to his people is … “You shall not worship other God than ME”. Nowadays, there are a lot of interpretations. Worst, there are a lot of false wisdom poisoning human raise. Satan has utilized all means to convey humans to hell since Judgement day is coming. No single person on earth can prevent.
As most enjoy almost all kind of festivity not only Sinulog, let me leave this question, HOW WAS YOUR FAITH? HOW WAS YOUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?

Not sure about the entity called Satan — “Do not look for Satan outside yourself. The devil is not an extraordinary force that attacks from without; it is an ordinary voice within.” The devil lives and thrives every time we allow ourselves to be pulled in by negativity. There is no red or black guy with horns and tail and trident. I think, whatever is one’s faith, the best wisdom is to adopt is to be kind to everyone.

hehehe. this is what I’m saying I’m hesitant. Miss, I don’t know to interact with you because we have a different views and set of beliefs. We have different influences. Its a deep and complicated topic though! I’m sweating over here Mam! hahaha. But personally, I do believe Satan do exist… that is if we are going to base it on the bible. From the old book to the new… that creature exist… as it was mention in some stories. But talking out of the bible content, I also agree with you that the devil lives and thrives every time we allow ourselves to be pulled in by negativity. And above all it …. as you said, the best wisdom is to adopt is to be kind to everyone.
